Mr. Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, articulates the complexity of setting timelines for the ongoing battle against illegal mining, commonly called ‘galamsey.’
He emphasizes, “We cannot guarantee that individuals will cease their desire to engage in ‘galamsey.’ The fight against this challenge must be viewed as a lifelong commitment!”
He further elaborates, “Firstly, I am not convinced that establishing a timeline is the most productive conversation we should be having. It should be understood as an ongoing effort. The reality is that we cannot ensure that the allure of ‘galamsey’ will ever fade.”
Mr. Kwakye Ofosu underscores the perpetual nature of this struggle, stating, “Whenever someone considers embarking on ‘galamsey’ and takes that first step, it becomes the responsibility of the state to intervene and counteract this illegal activity.
Given that human nature often inclines individuals towards actions that defy the law, we must remain perpetually vigilant.
What truly matters is that people witness tangible proof of our commitment to combating this issue.”
He concludes with an urgent call to action: “Thus, if anyone, including myself, is engaged in ‘galamsey’ today, the government must act swiftly to halt such activities and enforce the law.
This demonstrates a serious commitment to addressing the problem, rather than confining our efforts to a temporary framework, such as saying, ‘In two months, we will tackle ‘galamsey’.”
