Parliament has summoned the Minister for the Interior, Alhaji Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, to appear before the House on March 25, 2025, to clarify the circumstances surrounding the search of the residence of Dr. Ernest Addison, former Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), on Wednesday March 19.
The Deputy Majority Leader, Mr. George Kweku Ricketts-Hagan, made the announcement during the presentation of the Business Statement for the upcoming week in Parliament last Friday.
He confirmed that the Minister would provide a detailed briefing to MPs on Tuesday, March 25, 2025.
“Mr. Speaker, the Business Committee has scheduled the Minister for the Interior to brief the House on Tuesday, March 25, 2025, on the circumstances leading to the raid on the residence of the former Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Ernest Addison, on Wednesday, March 19,” Ricketts-Hagan said.
On the morning of March 19, 2025, armed men, reportedly security operatives, allegedly raided Dr. Addison’s residence in Roman Ridge, searching for cash believed to be hidden in a vault.
The incident has sparked significant concern over its legality and the methods used in the operation.
Minority Reacts
Following the raid, the Minority in Parliament held a press conference on March 20, 2025, where they condemned what they described as a disturbing pattern of unlawful raids targeting former officials of the previous administration.
Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, recalled a similar raid on the home of former Finance Minister, Ken Ofori-Atta, allegedly carried out by Richard Jakpa, a known NDC activist and self-identified Director of Operations at the National Security.
Afenyo-Markin denounced the style of these raids, calling them a violation of individuals’ rights.
“This Rambo-style approach must cease,” he stated.
Government’s Explanation
In response to the raid, government officials, including Deputy Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, clarified that the operation at Dr. Addison’s residence was part of ongoing investigations into the alleged misappropriation of state assets.
He confirmed that the search was legally conducted with a valid warrant, taking full responsibility for the operation.
“We take full responsibility for these searches, and I can confirm they were conducted in accordance with legal procedures,” he affirmed.
BoG Governor to Brief Parliament
In addition to the Interior Minister’s briefing, Mr. Ricketts-Hagan also announced that Dr. Johnson Pandit Asiama, the current Governor of the Bank of Ghana, will brief Parliament on March 26, 2025, regarding the collapse of some banks and financial institutions.
This session is part of Parliament’s ongoing consideration of issues affecting the financial sector.
Concerns were raised by the First Deputy Minority Chief Whip and NPP MP for Tolon, Habib Iddrisu, about the timing of the briefing, particularly with regard to some of the banks currently involved in court cases.
He urged Parliament to focus on specific matters without prejudicing ongoing legal proceedings.
In response, Ricketts-Hagan assured that the Governor’s briefing would not cover issues currently before the courts.
The goal, he explained, was to provide MPs with important information relevant to their role as representatives of the people, without influencing the outcomes of legal cases.
