“In 18 Months, I’ve Delivered What Adwoa Safo Couldn’t do in 20 Years”—Elikplim Akurugu on Dome-Kwabenya Roads

The Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Elikplim Akurugu Faustina, has asserted that her performance within just one and a half years in office surpasses what her predecessor, Sara Adwoa Safo, achieved over two decades.

Speaking during a sod-cutting ceremony for the construction of an 8.2-kilometre road network linking Ashongman Last Stop, Pure Water, and Old Ashongman, Akurugu highlighted what she described as a major milestone in addressing the constituency’s long-standing infrastructure challenges.

According to her, the road project has been awarded to two contractors. The first will begin work from the Hamidia area, while F.T. Global is expected to continue construction from that point through to Ashongman Last Stop.

The project will connect Old Ashongman to New Ashongman, improving mobility and easing transportation difficulties for residents.

Akurugu emphasized that despite the constituency having had two previous Members of Parliament, the road remained uncompleted for years.

She attributed the breakthrough to persistent lobbying and responsiveness to the concerns of constituents.

“During my campaign, residents consistently raised concerns about the poor state of roads. That compelled me to act swiftly,” she said.

She explained that her efforts included engaging the President, who subsequently directed the Roads Minister to inspect the site—leading to the commencement of the project.

The MP also referenced another ongoing road project, noting that on March 2, she performed a similar sod-cutting ceremony for the Musuku Grand Star–Naman road, which is currently under construction.

While touting these developments as progress, Akurugu acknowledged that significant work remains. She noted that several roads within Dome-Kwabenya are still in poor condition and pledged to continue advocating for further infrastructure improvements.

“There is still a lot to be done. I will continue to lobby to ensure more roads in Dome-Kwabenya are fixed,” she added.

Ga East Municipal Chief Executive, Edmund Agboh, confirmed that work on the project is already underway following the sod-cutting ceremony.

According to him, construction activity has begun in earnest, with excavators deployed on site to carry out dredging works. He explained that contractors are prioritizing drainage improvements, including the coating and expansion of gutters to ensure proper water flow in the area.

Agboh stressed the urgency of the project, noting that the onset of the rainy season makes timely intervention critical for residents who depend on the road.

“The rains have started, so the earlier these issues are addressed, the better for the people who use this route,” he stated.

He also expressed appreciation to the president, John Dramani Mahama, for what he described as the extension of his “resetting agenda” to the Dome-Kwabenya constituency.

Additionally, the MCE commended the Member of Parliament, Elikplim Akurugu, for her role in lobbying for the rehabilitation of roads across the Ga East Municipality, many of which have long been in a deteriorated condition.
