The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is calling for the immediate arrest of Chief Sofo Azorka following an alleged physical assault on the party’s 3rd National Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, during the Akwatia by-election.
In a statement, the NPP described the incident as an “unprovoked attack” carried out by Chief Azorka and his associates.
The party also condemned reported death threats made against the Minority Leader, Alexander Afenyo-Markin; the NPP’s National Organiser, Henry Nana Boakye; and Member of Parliament Frank Annor Dompreh.
The threats and assault, according to the NPP, were allegedly made by Chief Azorka, who serves as the 1st National Vice Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), and Alhaji Abdul Wahab Amadu, the NDC’s Constituency Communications Officer for Abuakwa North.
The NPP described the acts as violent and reckless, warning that such behaviour from senior political figures threatens national security and undermines democratic progress, especially in light of Ghana’s recent drop in the Global Peace Index rankings.
The party said it will formally report the incident to the Ghana Police Service and urged the Inspector General of Police to immediately arrest and investigate Chief Azorka, Alhaji Wahab, and others allegedly involved, citing video evidence currently circulating in the media.
“The actions of Chief Azorka and Alhaji Wahab must be thoroughly investigated and appropriately punished to uphold the rule of law and safeguard our democracy,” the NPP statement concluded.
