NPP Announces Nationwide Demonstration On August 6 Over “Selective Justice” And Discontinuation Of High-Profile Cases

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has served notice it will embark on a massive demonstration on Thursday, August 6, 2026, in Accra and other regions to protest what it calls the weaponization of justice and the systematic discontinuation of cases against persons affiliated with the governing NDC.

Addressing the press, the NPP National Organizer, Henry Nana Boakye said the demonstration, being organized in collaboration with other political parties, civil society organizations, professional bodies, student and youth movements and well-meaning citizens, is to defend democracy, the Constitution and the rule of law.

“The time for silence is over. We shall embark on a massive demonstration to defend our democracy,” the party stated.

Nolle prosequi and acquittals

He anchored the party’s protest on a series of decisions by the Attorney-General to enter nolle prosequi in high-profile cases, leading to acquittal and discharge of accused persons who had earlier been ordered to open their defence.

He cited the UniBank case, involving GH¢5.7 billion, which included the founder, Dr. Kwabena Duffuor, and others including the current Governor of the Bank of Ghana. The party claimed the court had ruled they had a case to answer, but the Attorney-General entered nolle prosequi and freed them.

Nana Boakye also cited a case involving GH¢200 million meant for affordable housing, and the COCOBOD case involving GH¢271 million, all of which it said were discontinued after the court had ruled that accused persons had a case to answer.

He further pointed to the acquittal of former MASLOC CEO, Sedinam Tamakloe-Attionu, in a GH¢90 million case. The party questioned the Court of Appeal’s reasoning that the charge sheet was defective, arguing the issue was never raised during trial.

He referenced Section 406 of Act 30, which provides that no finding or sentence by a court of competent jurisdiction shall be reversed on appeal on account of errors or irregularities in the charge sheet.

“It is a wholesale amnesty for the politically connected dressed up in prosecutorial discretion,” the party said, arguing that under Article 296 discretion must be exercised fairly and not capriciously.

Two-track justice claim

The NPP national organizer alleged a pattern of two-track justice, where NDC-affiliated persons are freed while opponents are prosecuted swiftly.

“Public confidence in the court is the only currency the judiciary possesses. And yesterday, that currency was devalued,” it said, adding that the message being sent is that “accountability is for opponents and impunity is for friends.”

He aalso criticised the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, describing the process as opaque and constitutionally suspect. It claimed the removal was part of a deliberate agenda to capture the judiciary.

He raised concerns about the current Chief Justice, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, saying eyes are on him because he is a beneficiary of the process, and also referencing the appointment of his wife as Director-General of Prisons.

The party’s national organizer further alleged that all cases under Operation Recover All Loot (ORAL) involving NPP members have been concentrated before two judges – Justice Aboagye Tandoh and Justice Afia Serwaa Asare Botwe – who it claimed have been instructed not to go on legal vacation which begins on August 1, to fast-track convictions.

“Justice hurried is justice buried,” the party said, describing the trials as a “choreographed conveyor belt to predetermined conviction.”

Free speech and new tribunals

Nana Boakye also accused government of suppressing free speech, claiming over 25 persons have been arrested for comments deemed offensive to President Mahama, with some denied bail or given what it called punitive bail conditions of up to GH¢80 million, GH¢100 million and GH¢900 million.

He cited the arrest of one Freda Frimpong Manson for a post on X regarding a viral video involving President Mahama and the National Security Coordinator.

He also opposed the reintroduction of public tribunals, describing it as an institution Ghanaians rejected decades ago, now being resurrected to harass the opposition.

Demands

The NPP made three key demands:

1.  That the Attorney-General, as a matter of consistency and fairness, immediately discontinue all cases against appointees of the previous NPP administration currently standing trial.

2.  That the Attorney-General renders a full public account of every case involving persons affiliated with the governing party that has been discontinued since January 2025, with reasons.

3.  That the Judicial Council takes urgent steps to restore public confidence, and that Ashanti Regional Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako [Chairman Wontumi], recently sentenced to 20 years imprisonment with hard labour, be released. The party said his conviction was politically motivated and his lawyers have filed over 20 grounds of appeal.

“Our democracy is under siege. The 1992 Constitution for which so many sacrificed is being hollowed out before our very eyes, and all well-meaning Ghanaians must rise to defend it,” the NPP added.
