The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has raised alarm over what it describes as a calculated attempt by the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) to undermine the upcoming by-election in Akwatia through the deployment of disguised operatives posing as security personnel.
At a press conference held on Wednesday, August 27, at the party’s headquarters in Accra, NPP Communications Director Richard Ahiagbah alleged that the NDC is planning to infiltrate the election with individuals dressed in police uniforms to create chaos and intimidate voters.
He described the alleged plot as a threat to Ghana’s democracy and urged swift intervention from the security agencies.
Mr. Ahiagbah specifically called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Christian Tetteh Yohuno, to ensure maximum transparency in the deployment of security personnel for the September 2 by-election.
Among the measures he proposed were the public release of the names of senior officers assigned to each electoral area and their corresponding regional commanders.
“In the interest of transparency and public trust, we call on the IGP to publish the list of senior officers to be deployed to each polling area, as well as the regional commanders who will oversee operations,” Ahiagbah said.
He further demanded that all officers on election duty be in full uniform and clearly identifiable with name tags to prevent impersonation.
“Every officer deployed for this critical by-election must be in uniform and wear official name tags for easy identification. This is essential to prevent infiltration by impostors masquerading as police officers,” he added.
These concerns come amid earlier claims by the NPP that individuals affiliated with the NDC were allegedly undergoing training under the guise of national security to disrupt the electoral process.
The by-election in Akwatia, located in the Eastern Region, was necessitated by the death of sitting MP Ernest Kumi on July 7, following a brief illness.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled the vote for Monday, September 2, 2025.
As political tensions rise ahead of the poll, the NPP is calling for vigilance and firm action to safeguard the integrity of the electoral process.
