GHS 1 Million Hidden in Fertilizer Bags: Police Intercept Cash-Laden Vehicle in Juapong

In a significant security operation, the Regional Police Command has intercepted a Ford Transit commercial vehicle transporting a concealed sum of over One Million Ghana Cedis (GHS 1,021,700) in one-cedi notes and coins.

The interception occurred at approximately 4:45 PM on Tuesday at a routine snap checkpoint in Juapong.

The vehicle, which was en-route from the Volta Region to the Ashanti Region, was ostensibly loaded with 68 bags of fertilizer.

However, a closer inspection by officers on duty revealed that the bags were used to conceal large volumes of cash—a method raising suspicion of potential money laundering or illicit activity.

The driver, Edward Ansah, was promptly detained for questioning.

During preliminary interrogation, he informed police that he had been hired by an unknown individual in Kumasi to transport the money from Ho to its destination in the Ashanti Region.

He reportedly claimed to have no knowledge of the source or intended use of the funds, acting merely as a contracted transporter.

The suspect is currently in police custody and is assisting with ongoing investigations.

Authorities have yet to identify the individual or group behind the attempted transfer of the funds, and no official charges have been filed as of the time of this report.

Police Investigating Possible Criminal Links

According to law enforcement sources, the unusually large volume of cash, combined with the covert method of transport, has triggered suspicions about the legality of the operation.

The possibility of links to illegal financial operations, unregistered money transfer services, tax evasion, or political financing is currently being explored.

A senior officer involved in the case, who spoke on condition of anonymity, emphasized that transporting such significant amounts of physical currency without proper documentation or security protocols is highly irregular and potentially unlawful.

“The concealment of such a large sum in fertilizer bags raises several red flags. We are investigating whether this is tied to any organized network or illicit financial activity,” the officer stated.

Public Assurance and Further Updates

The Regional Police Command has assured the public of its commitment to upholding law and order, adding that comprehensive updates will be provided as the investigation unfolds.

“We urge the public to remain calm and patient as we pursue this matter to its logical conclusion. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to come forward,” a police spokesperson said.
