The Ghana Police Service in the Eastern South Regional Command has arrested five suspects for allegedly posing as officials of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) and extorting money from miners.
According to a press release issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Command, the suspects were arrested on Friday, January 2, 2026. They have been identified as Moses Tapiam, 43; Christopher Amakor, 29; Casimir Nunekpeku, 29; Wisdom Miwonuko, 35; and Paul Agbanu, 53.
Police say the suspects were dressed in security uniforms and falsely claimed to be NAIMOS operatives from Accra. They reportedly moved from one mining site to another in the Akwadum area of the Abuakwa South Municipality near Kibi, where they allegedly extorted money from miners.
The suspects were arrested by a genuine NAIMOS team while travelling in a Mitsubishi 4×4 pick-up vehicle with registration number GS 536-25. They were subsequently handed over to the Eastern South Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Kibi for further investigations.
The Police have cautioned members of the public, especially individuals who impersonate security officers, to desist from such acts, noting that impersonation constitutes a criminal offence.
The Command has also assured the public that anyone found holding themselves out as security officials without authorization will be arrested and prosecuted.
The five suspects are currently in police custody assisting with investigations and are expected to be arraigned before court in due course.
The statement was signed by DSP David Fianko Okyere of the Public Affairs Unit, Eastern South Region.
