A fatal collision between a passenger bus and a cargo truck at Nkawkaw Oframase on the Accra–Kumasi highway has resulted in the death of one person and left 22 others critically injured, sending shockwaves through the local community and reigniting concerns over road safety on Ghana’s highways.
The accident occurred in the late hours of Tuesday, involving a Kia Granbird bus with registration number GR 2399-15, and a Kia Rhino truck bearing the number GW 2285-11. Both vehicles were severely damaged upon impact.
According to DO II Samuel Mante, the Kwahu West Municipal Fire Commander, emergency responders from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) arrived at the scene promptly and had to extricate several passengers who had been trapped inside the wreckage.
“Our team had to use hydraulic rescue tools to reach some of the victims who were pinned under twisted metal. It was a race against time,” he stated.
One person was confirmed dead at the scene, while the 22 injured passengers were rushed to the Nkawkaw Holy Family Hospital, where they are currently receiving emergency medical care.
Hospital authorities have described some of the injuries as life-threatening.
The cause of the crash remains unknown, but police have launched a full-scale investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the deadly accident.
Preliminary reports suggest that poor visibility, driver error, or mechanical failure may have contributed.
In the wake of the tragedy, Fire Commander Mante issued a stern warning to commercial drivers and transport operators, urging them to prioritize safety checks and refrain from reckless driving, especially during night-time travel.
“Long-distance travel on this highway demands vigilance and well-maintained vehicles.
We urge drivers to slow down, avoid fatigue, and respect all road traffic regulations,” he emphasized.
Authorities are also working to locate and notify the families of those involved in the crash.
