Pru West MP Urges Bold Action to Secure a Brighter Future for Ghana’s Youth

The Member of Parliament for Pru West, Hon. Ntekuni Kofi Emmanuel, has called for deliberate and practical steps to address the growing challenges faced by young people in Ghana, warning that the future of the nation hinges on how well it plans for its youth today.

Speaking on the floor of Parliament to mark World Population Day—commemorated globally on July 11—the MP stressed the urgency of implementing youth-focused policies that provide real opportunities and hope.

This year’s theme, “Empowering Young People to Create the Families They Want in a Fair and Hopeful World,” reaffirms the commitment made at the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development: that every individual has the right to make informed choices about their lives and futures.

Hon. Ntekuni emphasized that the family remains the cornerstone of society and must be protected by creating conditions that allow young people to thrive.

“Many young people today face economic uncertainty, gender inequality, health challenges, climate disruptions, and conflict.

Despite this, they continue to lead with courage and vision.

They are asking for systems that support their rights and allow them to make empowered choices,” he said.

The MP also expressed concern about Ghana’s rapidly growing population, projected to reach 36 million by 2025, forming part of Africa’s anticipated 1.55 billion population by 2050.

Behind these numbers, he stressed, are real people—young Ghanaians looking for opportunity, women seeking empowerment, and families striving for dignity and security.

He called for a balanced national strategy that embraces economic growth, social inclusion, gender equity, environmental protection, and respect for human rights.

Hon. Ntekuni praised former President John Dramani Mahama for his dedication to population management and youth empowerment.

“We are on the right path, thanks to the leadership and vision of H.E. John Dramani Mahama.

His people-centered policies are empowering our youth with the tools, dignity, and voice to shape their futures.

Mr. Speaker, this government is listening—and responding,” he added.
