Ban on sale of public lands: Blanket ban is counterproductive; possess ripple effect on critical sectors – Subin MP

The Member of Parliament for Subin, Hon. Kofi Obiri Yeboah, has strongly criticized the government’s total ban on the sale, lease, and processing of public lands, calling the move short-sighted and harmful to various key sectors.

Since taking office, President John Mahama directed the Lands Commission, via a letter dated January 10, 2025, to immediately stop all transactions involving state-owned lands.

While the move is intended to protect public land for future generations, Hon. Yeboah warns it could unfairly impact individuals and businesses that have already followed the proper procedures to acquire such lands.

Speaking to the press, the Subin MP stressed that halting all land deals without considering the wider consequences will disrupt land administration and financing systems.

He urged the government to reconsider the sweeping ban to avoid unintended fallout.

“Though protecting public land is vital, a blanket freeze affects those who have legitimately invested time and resources to secure land interests.

For example, lands in the Osu Mantse layout owned by the state but lawfully acquired by individuals and companies are now caught in this freeze,” he stated.

He added, “Acquiring state land involves a rigorous process that must be respected to maintain trust and order in land dealings.”
