In the wake of mass expression of remedial approach to confront the menace of illegal mining phenomenon which has escalated over the years, Onyina-Acheampong Akwasi Gyamfi, Member of Parliament for Kwabre East has proposed strategically distinct measure to deal with the canker.
The lawmaker is calling for a bipartisan approach to tackle the issue, emphasizing the need for sustainable job creation to wean people off galamsey.
“We need to provide alternatives, create jobs, and ensure sustainable livelihoods for our youth,” he said.

Acheampong says a targeted approach to responsible mining with proper regulation,where the youths are engaged in reclamation and afforestation programmes must be adopted as the way forward to environmental sustainability.
According to the lawmaker, this approach would ensure demarcating areas for mining, and employing people to reclam and plant trees in abid to providing sustainable jobs.
He stressed that creation of sufficient job opportunities has the potential to kill the desire for galamsey.
