Beyond Chocolate Day Celebrations: Ahanta West MP Calls for Affordable Chocolate to Boost Health Benefits

The Member of Parliament for Ahanta West, Honourable Mavis Kuukua Bissue, is advocating for a review of chocolate prices to make it more affordable for Ghanaians.

She believes that Ghanaian chocolate is authentic with low sugar content, particularly dark chocolate, has numerous health benefits that could help reduce the burden of diseases in the country.

Honourable Bissue highlighted the rich flavonoids and antioxidants in chocolate, which can help improve heart health, brain function, and mood enhancement.

She noted that moderate consumption of chocolate can reduce blood pressure, improve circulation, and lower stress levels, among other benefits.

The MP expressed concern that the high price of chocolate makes it inaccessible to many Ghanaians, particularly those in low-income brackets. She is calling for a deliberate policy to reduce the price of chocolate, making it more affordable for the ordinary Ghanaian.

“If the price is that high, how would the ordinary Ghanaian buy to manage or cure illnesses that do not require medication?” she questioned.

Honourable Bissue believes that making chocolate more affordable could help reduce the health burden on the country.

The Ahanta West lawmaker is urging authorities and stakeholders in the cocoa sector to consider the health benefits of chocolate and work towards making it more accessible to Ghanaians.
