The National Identification Authority (NIA) has announced the successful completion of the registration of children aged 6 to 14 years in the North East and Upper East Regions.
According to the Authority, a total of 283,731 children were registered during the exercise, which forms part of the NIA’s nationwide mass registration programme for minors.
The exercise, which is aimed at ensuring every Ghanaian from age six is captured under the National Identity Register, and issued with a Ghana Card, was carried out in schools and designated registration centres across the two regions.
The NIA said the registration of children is critical for national planning, identity management and access to public services, adding that it will help government to accurately plan for education, health and social protection interventions for children.
The Authority expressed appreciation to parents, guardians, teachers, traditional leaders and regional stakeholders for their cooperation and support during the exercise.
Meanwhile, the Authority has urged parents and guardians in the Upper West and Savannah Regions to get their children ready for the next phase of the registration exercise, which will be rolled out in those regions soon.
It said similar exercises will continue in other regions, and urged parents whose children are yet to be registered to take advantage of subsequent phases to ensure no child is left out.
