The Adentan Circuit Court 1, under the presiding authority of Her Ladyship Angela Attachie, has ordered two men to be remanded in police custody for two weeks following their appearance in court concerning the disturbing alleged defilement of a 13-year-old girl.
The 13-year-old girl is two months pregnant as a result of the defilement.
The accused, identified as Alfred Quansah, 18, and Paul Mbea, 30, both entered pleas of guilty with explanations during the proceedings.
They asserted that the girl had consented to engage in the sexual acts; however, this claim contradicts Ghanaian law, which mandates that individuals under the age of 16 cannot legally consent to sexual activity.
As such, these actions are classified as defilement, irrespective of any perceived mutual agreement.
Lawyer Belinda Narkey Quaynor, who represents the victim, elaborated on the situation after the court session, clarifying that despite the accused’s admissions, the court has opted to postpone sentencing for the time being.
This delay underscores the complexities surrounding the case.
In a move reflecting due diligence, the judge mandated an age assessment for Alfred Quansah, due to doubts about the veracity of his stated age of 18.
The outcome of this evaluation will be pivotal in determining whether he is to be tried under adult criminal law or juvenile regulations.
The prosecution vehemently opposed bail, highlighting the absence of permanent residential addresses for the accused, which complicates efforts to locate six additional individuals named by the victim.
The troubling background of the case reveals that the victim resides with her parents and siblings in the Madina area, where financial struggles and insufficient oversight often leave her vulnerable.
In July 2025, her stepfather became concerned upon noticing significant physical changes and suspected that she might be pregnant.
After further investigation, the girl disclosed that she was indeed pregnant, naming the accused among others involved.
This claim was supported by a medical report.
Following their arrest, both men confessed during police interrogation to having engaged in sexual contact with the girl.
For now, they are scheduled to return to court pending the completion of the age assessment.
In a positive development, the victim is currently in a protective environment, having received support from Hon. Francis Xavier-Sosu, the Member of Parliament for Madina, who is actively providing legal assistance to ensure her rights and wellbeing are upheld.
