Gyakye Quayson Acquitted and Discharged After 3-Year Legal Battle

Mr. James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, has been acquitted and discharged of all charges following a lengthy three-year legal battle.

The charges against him included accusations of deceit of a public officer, forgery of passports or travel certificates, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office.

Speaking to journalists after the court ruling on Wednesday, April 9, Mr. Quayson expressed his relief, saying, “To be honest with you, my sister here can attest that when you are not guilty, there’s nothing to worry about.

No matter where you place a person, they will bounce back. That was my reaction; I know I’m innocent.”

He continued, “I wouldn’t do this. I didn’t come here to deceive or cheat anyone. I came to help my community and serve my country.”

Mr. Quayson further stated that while he always ensured to follow proper procedures, the case had been heavily influenced by politics.

He added, “This case is political; there are no facts to support it,” reflecting his belief that political motives were behind the accusations.

The legal battle began in 2020 when Mr. Quayson, shortly after being elected as MP for Assin North, was accused of making false declarations related to his eligibility to stand for election.

The case had drawn significant public attention, with many viewing it as politically motivated.

Mr. Quayson expressed his disappointment after the case, saying, “You heard the facts from the judges.

Documents were falsified just to secure a conviction.

But she, referring to his legal team,” has remained firm and is innocent as well.”
