The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno has pledged to strengthen efforts against illegal mining, known as galamsey, describing it as a serious threat to national security, public safety, and the environment.

Speaking at the Regional Command Conference at the Police Headquarters on Friday, March 21, Mr. Yohuno stressed the urgent need to address the escalating dangers posed by illegal mining.

The IGP highlighted the security risks tied to galamsey, pointing out that violence linked to these activities has been on the rise.

“Illegal mining poses a major security threat, particularly in our forest reserves and mining communities,” he said.

He specifically mentioned the violent attacks on civilians and forest guards by armed criminals in areas like Western North, stressing that these acts of lawlessness must be stopped.

“In places like Western North, armed criminals have attacked innocent people, including forest guards, without cause,” he indicated.

Yohuno’s comments shed light on the broader issues caused by illegal mining, which has led to environmental destruction, deforestation, water pollution, and loss of livelihoods for local communities.

His strong stance underscores the government’s commitment to tackling the crisis with a focused and coordinated approach.

In his speech, the IGP instructed Regional Commanders to adopt a united and strategic approach to dealing with the galamsey issue.

“This lawlessness cannot continue, we are declaring war on illegal mining-related crimes,” he declared.

The IGP outlined a nationwide operation to dismantle galamsey operations and restore peace in affected communities.

The operation will focus on bringing criminals to justice and ensuring that law enforcement takes swift and decisive action.
