Dr. Bawumia visits Kumasi Market

Former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has made a generous contribution to support traders affected by the recent fire at Adum in Kumasi.

On Tuesday, March 25, 2025, he donated GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to help the victims rebuild their businesses after the devastating blaze that occurred on March 24.

The fire destroyed numerous shops and stalls in the heart of Kumasi’s Adum business district, leaving traders with significant losses.

The damage, amounting to millions of Ghana cedis, left many traders devastated, with their livelihoods up in smoke.

During his visit to the site, Dr. Bawumia met with affected traders, some of whom were visibly emotional as they recounted the immense loss of years of hard work.

“I am donating GH¢200,000 and 1,000 bags of cement to assist in rebuilding your businesses.

I encourage other private individuals and businesses to also lend a hand in helping these traders get back on their feet,” Dr. Bawumia said.

He underscored the need for collective support from both the public and private sectors to ensure the swift recovery of traders and the restoration of the Adum district.

Dr. Bawumia acknowledged the serious financial and emotional toll the fire had taken on the traders and expressed his commitment to aiding their recovery efforts.

He also urged patience as the Ghana National Fire Service conducts its investigation into the cause of the fire.

“We must allow the Ghana National Fire Service to complete its investigation to determine the cause of the fire, so we can take appropriate steps to prevent future incidents,” he stated.

In addition, the former Vice President urged the government to speed up the completion of the Kejetia Central Market Phase II project, which was about 80% complete when the New Patriotic Party (NPP) left office.

He believes its timely completion would provide relief and modern facilities for the traders in the area.

“I encourage the government to complete Phase II of the Kejetia Central Market as it is crucial for the welfare of the traders here,” he added.

Dr. Bawumia also took the time to commend the fire service personnel for their swift response, which helped limit the damage.

He also expressed concern for two fire officers who were hospitalized after the incident, wishing them a speedy recovery.

“I want to commend the fire personnel for their quick action in containing the fire. I’ve heard that two fire officers have been hospitalized, and I wish them a speedy recovery,” he said.

Accompanying Dr. Bawumia during the visit were Bernard Boasiako, the Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), also known as Chairman Wontumi, and other NPP officials.
