Ghana’s traditional woven textile Kente, has been granted a Geographical Indication (GI) tag, officially recognising it as a product of Ghanaian origin and protecting its cultural and economic value.

Adorned by millions around the world, Kente was added to Unesco’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2024 – recognising it as a cultural tradition worth preserving and protecting.

The GI tag was granted by the Ghana Standards Authority, in collaboration with the Registrar-General’s Department and the World Intellectual Property Organization, to protect the fabric.

It officially recognises Kente as a Ghanaian heritage product, protecting it from imitation and ensuring that only authentic, locally woven Kente can be marketed under that name.

“This protection acts as an impenetrable barrier against counterfeiting, ensuring only genuine Kente from Ghana carries its revered name.” Edmond Moukala, Unesco Representative to Ghana

“With GI status, Kente can command higher value on both local and international markets, meaning more income directly to the weavers who create it.

It gives them a competitive edge – buyers now know they’re getting the real thing, tied to a specific origin and tradition.”Amma Prempeh, Kente Ambassador

Kente, woven by the Asante of the Ashanti Region and the Ewe of the Volta Region, holds deep meaning in Ghanaian culture.

Each colour and pattern tells a story of history, unity, and identity, reflecting values like royalty, strength, and spirituality.
