The Director-General of the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) has cautioned commercial motorbike operators, commonly known as okada riders, to strictly comply with road traffic regulations or risk losing any future legalization under a subsequent government.
According to the Director-General, the continued push for the formal recognition of commercial motorbike operations depends largely on the conduct of riders on the roads.
He emphasized that persistent violations such as reckless riding, disregard for traffic signals, and failure to use protective gear could undermine public confidence and make it difficult for future administrations to sustain or defend legalization efforts.
He noted that while discussions around regulating and possibly legalizing commercial motorbike transport are ongoing, responsible behavior remains a critical condition.
“If riders fail to demonstrate discipline and respect for road safety laws, a future government may have no option but to reverse any progress made,” he warned.
The NRSA, he added, remains committed to improving road safety nationwide and will continue engaging rider unions, transport stakeholders, and law enforcement agencies to promote safer riding practices.
