GIS Officer Arrested Over Alleged Transport of 2,600 Rounds of AK-47 Ammunition in Ashanti Region

An officer of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has been arrested in connection with the alleged transportation of 2,600 rounds of AK-47 live ammunition intercepted in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as AICO I Ahmed Abdul Samad, told investigators that he previously served as a dispatch rider at the Tema Regional Immigration Headquarters before being transferred to the Paga Sector Command in June 2025. He said that prior to his transfer, he left behind some personal belongings, including a body armour plate and a pair of old black long boots.

According to AICO I Samad, on December 26, 2025, he contacted another immigration officer, identified only as Isaac, who is stationed at the Immigration Headquarters in Accra, to send the items to him. He stated that the consignment reportedly included a body armour plate, long black boots, a ballistic helmet, an electric diffuser, and a disco bulb.

The items were allegedly transported on an OA Bus with registration number GT 5771-18, driven by one Charles Brown. The suspect further indicated that arrangements had been made for a man identified as Siso in Walewale to receive the parcel on December 27, 2025. He later learned, however, that the consignment had been intercepted and that an arrest had been made.

Police say the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with investigations. Security agencies are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the transportation of the ammunition and to determine whether other individuals may be involved.

The incident has raised concerns about the possible role of some uniformed personnel in undermining efforts to combat crime and illicit arms trafficking.
