Ghana Deepens Digital Trust as Gov’t, DPC and GAPP Launch Data Protection Week 2026

Government of Ghana, in collaboration with the Data Protection Commission (DPC) and the Ghana Association of Privacy Professionals (GAPP), has launched Data Protection Week 2026 under the theme “Your Data, Your Identity: Building Trust in Ghana’s Digital Future.”

The Deputy Minister for Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, MP, reaffirmed Government’s commitment to data protection as a critical pillar of Ghana’s digital transformation when he officially launched the week-long initiative.

Speaking at the launch in Accra on Monday, January 2026, Hon. Sukparu expressed appreciation to the Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission for providing a comprehensive overview of the Commission’s activities over the past year, as well as the plans for the 2026 Data Protection Week celebrations.

He highlighted the success of the Commission’s “Privacy is Personal” campaign, launched in September last year, describing it as a significant milestone in Ghana’s data protection journey.

According to the Deputy Minister, the campaign was the largest public education initiative on data protection since the establishment of the Commission over a decade ago, representing a deliberate effort to take data protection awareness beyond policy documents and into the everyday lives of citizens.

He noted that the campaign received an encouraging nationwide response, reaching millions of Ghanaians through radio, television, print, and digital platforms.

The initiative also reinforced public understanding that privacy is not an abstract concept, but one that is personal, practical, and relevant to daily life. This impact, he said, underscored the importance of sustained public education in building compliance and public trust.

Building on this momentum, Hon. Sukparu welcomed the decision to expand Data Protection Week 2026 into a month-long national programme, culminating in a National Data Protection Conference in February.

He said the move reflects Government’s recognition that data protection must evolve in tandem with Ghana’s rapidly advancing digital ecosystem.

He further noted that as Ghana continues to invest in digital identity systems, mobile money platforms, e-government services, and emerging technologies, public confidence in the lawful, secure, and responsible handling of personal data remains essential to unlocking the full benefits of these investments.

Hon. Sukparu reiterated Government’s commitment to supporting the Data Protection Commission in the execution of its mandate, strengthening compliance across both public and private institutions, and promoting responsible innovation.

He encouraged all organisations to work closely with the Commission to uphold the principles of the Data Protection Act.
