“Your Data, Your Identity”: DPC Unveils Theme for Data Protection Week 2026

The Executive Director of the Data Protection Commission (DPC), Dr. Arnold Kavaarpuo, has unveiled the theme for Data Protection Week 2026 as “Your Data, Your Identity: Building Trust in Ghana’s Digital Future,” describing it as a timely response to the growing link between personal data and individual identity in today’s digital age.

According to Dr. Kavaarpuo, the theme highlights the urgent need for strong data governance frameworks to serve as the foundation for a secure, inclusive, and prosperous digital economy in Ghana.

He noted that with the rapid expansion of mobile money services, e-government platforms, digital health systems, and online commerce, the personal data of Ghanaian citizens is constantly being collected, processed, and stored.

This data, he explained, has moved beyond simple information to become the digital fabric of identity, shaping access to credit, healthcare, employment, and social services.

“When we talk about data protection, we are fundamentally talking about protecting the dignity, autonomy, and economic agency of every Ghanaian,” Dr. Kavaarpuo said. “This year’s theme is a call to action.

A future built on digital innovation cannot be sustained on a foundation of mistrust. Compliance with the Data Protection Act, 2012 (Act 843) is non-negotiable for any organisation that handles the data of Ghanaian citizens.”

Collaborative Push for Compliance and Capacity Building

Dr. Kavaarpuo also highlighted the strategic partnership between the Data Protection Commission, as the regulator, and the Ghana Association of Privacy Professionals (GAPP), describing it as a comprehensive approach to strengthening Ghana’s data protection ecosystem.

He explained that activities planned for Data Protection Week 2026 will span a full month and are designed to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including the general public, private sector organisations, government institutions, and the media.

Highlights of the Month-Long Activities

Planned activities for the Data Protection Month include:

  • National Media Campaign: Radio and television discussions, as well as infographic campaigns, to demystify data protection rights for all Ghanaians.

  • Sectoral Compliance Workshops: Targeted sessions for key sectors such as FinTech, Health, Education, and Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs), offering practical guidance on implementing Act 843.

  • Master Classes: Capacity-building sessions for industry professionals to deepen expertise in data protection and privacy management.

  • School Outreach Programmes: Educational visits to schools to raise awareness within academic communities.

  • National Conference and Awards Night: A flagship conference and awards ceremony to conclude the month, recognising institutions that have demonstrated excellence in data protection compliance.

Call to Action

The DPC and GAPP jointly called on all stakeholders to play active roles in safeguarding Ghana’s digital future.

The media were urged to support public education efforts, investigate data privacy issues, and hold institutions accountable.

Public and private organisations were encouraged to review their data processing activities, ensure registration with the DPC, appoint qualified Data Protection Officers, and adopt transparent privacy policies.

The judiciary and legal community were also called upon to deepen their understanding of data protection laws to ensure effective adjudication and the protection of citizens’ digital rights.

Finally, the Commission appealed to every Ghanaian to take personal data protection seriously by understanding their rights to access, correct, and delete personal data, and by exercising caution when giving consent.

“The journey to a trusted digital future is a shared responsibility,” the statement concluded. “Let us all commit to protecting Your Data, Your Identity.”
