Mahama Bids Farewell to Chinese Envoy, Applauds China’s Role in Ghana’s Development

President John Dramani Mahama has expressed deep appreciation to Ambassador Tong for his dedicated service and significant contribution to strengthening relations between Ghana and the People’s Republic of China during his tenure as Chinese Ambassador to Ghana.

Speaking at a farewell engagement, President Mahama described Ambassador Tong as more than a diplomat, noting that he had become a trusted friend of Ghana.

He said it was with a sense of sadness that the country was seeing the Ambassador depart after years of fruitful cooperation.

The President reaffirmed that Ghana’s bilateral relations with China remain strong, cordial, and mutually beneficial.

In this context, he extended profound gratitude to Chinese President Xi Jinping for China’s critical support to Ghana, particularly its involvement in negotiations towards Ghana’s debt restructuring, which he said had been instrumental in stabilising the country’s economy.

President Mahama also highlighted China’s continued commitment to Ghana’s development, expressing appreciation for a US$30 million grant for the Aflao Market Project, as well as an additional US$30 million grant earmarked for the construction of a Science and Technology University in Damango.

He noted that these projects would significantly boost economic activity, improve livelihoods, and expand access to quality education.

According to the President, such interventions underscore China’s longstanding partnership with Ghana and its commitment to the country’s socio-economic transformation.

He concluded by thanking Ambassador Tong for his invaluable role in deepening the enduring ties between the two nations and wished him success in his future diplomatic and professional endeavours.
