The Ashaiman Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre has intervened in a housing dispute involving a caretaker and a female tenant over a verbal tenancy extension tied to a personal relationship.
According to the Centre’s report, the caretaker had initially rented a room to the woman for one year.
During the tenancy, the two entered into a romantic relationship.
The caretaker, who was managing the property in the landlord’s absence, reportedly granted the tenant a further one-year extension through a verbal agreement.
However, tensions arose after the initial rental period expired.
The tenant declined to vacate the room, maintaining that the caretaker had extended her tenancy and had represented himself as the owner of the property at the time of the extension.
Complicating matters, the relationship between the two deteriorated after the woman became pregnant by another man.
Despite this, the caretaker sought to reclaim possession of the room, arguing that the tenancy had ended.
After reviewing the matter, the ADR Centre directed the caretaker to compensate the tenant, citing the circumstances surrounding the verbal extension and his role in managing the property without clear ownership authority.
Separate Incident
In a different case highlighted in the report, a landlord allegedly evicted a tenant after discovering the tenant was in a sexual relationship with his wife.
The matter was also brought before the ADR Centre for mediation.
The Ashaiman ADR Centre continues to record and resolve a range of tenancy and domestic disputes, encouraging amicable settlements and lawful procedures in conflict resolution.
