A 32-year-old Nigerian woman, Amanda Pascal, has been sentenced to two years’ imprisonment by the Accra Circuit Court after pleading guilty to stealing items from a church located at the 48 Engineers Barracks in Teshie.
Before sentencing, Amanda reportedly appealed to the court for time, explaining that she was preparing for an outdooring ceremony scheduled for March.
Despite her plea, the court proceeded with sentencing after considering the facts of the case.
According to court records, the accused stole several items from the church premises, including:
- A deep fryer valued at GH¢1,500
- A Bluetooth speaker valued at GH¢3,423.21
- Trumpet mouthpieces valued at GH¢6,820
- A bottle of perfume valued at GH¢586
- Six tins of sardines valued at GH¢200
The total value of the stolen items amounted to over GH¢12,000.
Prosecution indicated that Amanda was captured on CCTV removing the items from the premises. In her caution statement to police, she admitted to the offence.
She told investigators that she had used some of the items and discarded the trumpet mouthpieces. Only the deep fryer and Bluetooth speaker were later retrieved.
The case investigator further informed the court that Amanda had prior convictions. She had previously been jailed by the LEKMA District Court in an unrelated matter.
Additionally, Amanda disclosed during proceedings that the Accra Circuit Court had earlier sentenced her to nine months’ imprisonment in another case.
In light of her guilty plea and criminal record, the court imposed a two-year custodial sentence.
The case highlights ongoing concerns about repeat offending and theft-related crimes, as well as the role of surveillance systems in assisting law enforcement investigations.
