Security Services Recruitment: Reduce cost for medicals from GH₵1,600 to GH₵500 or less- Nitiwul

Former Defence Minister, Dominic Nitiwul, has called for a reduction in the cost of medical examinations for Ghana’s security services recruitment, citing concerns over fairness and accessibility.

Speaking to journalists on the issue, Nitiwul emphasized that the current cost of ₵1,600 is excessive and should be brought down to ₵500 or less as it was at the time of NPP administration.

Dominic Nitiwul, who is also the MP for Bimbilla, criticized the decision by government to triple the cost of medicals, arguing that it would exclude many qualified candidates from applying.

He noted that the government’s priority should be to ensure that the recruitment process is inclusive and doesn’t discriminate against potential candidates due to financial constraints.

However, with regards to President Mahama’s directive for increment in recruitment slots from 5,000 to 10,000, the Former Defence Minister said “It’s still not enough as far as we’re concerned, because if you’ve opened up for about 500,000 and you’re recruiting 10,000 at the Ministry of Interior, it’s still woefully inadequate.”

The security services recruitment process has been marred by controversy, with over 500,000 applicants vying for only 5,000-10,000 slots.

The Former Defence Minister attributed the problems with the process to three key decisions: extending the age limit, charging ₵200 application fees, and tripling the cost of medicals.

The legislator’s comments come amidst growing concerns about the government’s handling of the recruitment process. The opposition has labelled the process a “ponzi scheme” and a “scam”, arguing that it’s unfair to ask young people to apply when there are limited positions available.

The government has been urged to ensure that adequate resources are allocated for the recruitment, training, and pay of recruits.

Nitiwul emphasized that the government should prioritize the welfare of the recruits and ensure that they are adequately equipped to serve the country.
