From Apprentices to Entrepreneurs: Madina Job Center Set to Graduate New Wave of Catering and Beauty Professionals

A new generation of skilled young entrepreneurs is set to emerge in Madina as the Madina Job Center (MJC), the flagship youth empowerment initiative spearheaded by Member of Parliament Francis-Xavier Sosu, prepares to hold a grand graduation ceremony for its latest cohorts of vocational trainees.

The event will celebrate the successful completion of training by participants in Catering Cohorts 1 and 2, alongside a dynamic group of graduates in the Makeup Artistry and Beautician programs—marking another milestone in the Center’s mission to tackle youth unemployment through skills development and entrepreneurship.

Since its establishment, the Madina Job Center has transformed from a job-placement initiative into what many describe as a “skills factory,” equipping young people with practical, income-generating abilities. Central to this transformation is its “Matriculation-to-Market” model, which ensures that trainees are not only taught technical skills but are also prepared to launch and sustain their own businesses.

 A Year of “Sizzling” Success

The Catering department has stood out as one of the Center’s most active units this year. Through its Catering 101 Masterclass and other specialized modules, trainees from Cohorts 1 and 2 have undergone months of rigorous, hands-on instruction.

Their training extended beyond culinary techniques to include vital business knowledge such as commercial food preparation, costing and pricing strategies, hygienic packaging, and market positioning. Graduates are now equipped to transform home-based cooking into viable catering enterprises, producing popular items such as samosas, spring rolls, and a variety of local dishes.

Defining Beauty, Empowering Lives

Joining the caterers are graduates from the beauty programs, who have honed their expertise in skincare analysis, professional makeup application, and bridal styling. With the rapid growth of the beauty and “glam” economy, these newly trained professionals are entering the industry with both technical competence and entrepreneurial guidance.

The program also provides mentorship and access to tools, ensuring graduates are industry-ready and able to build sustainable careers immediately upon completion.

The Sosu Vision: Jobs, Not Just Dreams

For Hon. Sosu, the initiative represents a practical solution to unemployment challenges. He has consistently emphasized that sustainable job creation lies in entrepreneurship rather than sole reliance on government employment.

“Our focus at the Madina Job Center is entrepreneurship. When we train a caterer or a makeup artist, we aren’t just giving them a skill; we are seeding a new micro-enterprise that will eventually hire others in Madina,” he noted.

Since 2020, the Center has impacted over 5,000 young people across multiple vocational sectors, earning recognition as a model for constituency-driven development in Ghana.

The upcoming graduation ceremony also sets the stage for the launch of the Madina Chamber of Commerce, an initiative designed to provide graduates with a structured business network, mentorship opportunities, and market access.

As these trainees transition from apprentices to entrepreneurs, the Madina Job Center continues to position itself at the forefront of grassroots economic transformation—turning skills into livelihoods and ambition into opportunity.
