Suspect in murder of missing couple deported from Dubai; 8 AK-47 rifles, 357 rounds of ammunition, pistols retrieved in nationwide operations

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has announced seven major breakthroughs in the fight against armed robbery and violent crime across the country, following weeks of coordinated, intelligence-led operations.

Addressing a press briefing at the National Police Headquarters on Sunday, the IGP said the Ghana Police Service remains resolute in dismantling robbery networks, recovering illegal weapons and ensuring law and order.

“The Ghana Police Service continues to demonstrate its resolve in dismantling armed robbery networks, bringing perpetrators to justice, recovering illegal weapons, and ensuring security, law and order across the country,” the IGP stated.

According to Mr. Yohuno, towards the end of the first quarter of the year, his team monitored and gathered intelligence on criminal gangs operating in the Western, Northern, Greater Accra and Savannah Regions. He subsequently deployed special intelligence teams to work with the Regional Commands to undertake targeted operations, all of which he said proved successful.

1. Suspect arrested in murder of missing couple

The Police have arrested 32-year-old Abraham Awundok in connection with the murder of Dr. Jesse Amuah and his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Amuah Esi, who were reported missing in April 2026.

Investigations led police to their residence and other locations, where their remains were recovered and conveyed to the Police Hospital Morgue for preservation and autopsy.

Police established that the suspect, who worked as an errand boy for the couple, murdered them, took their mobile phones, money and private vehicle, and fled to the United Arab Emirates.

He was declared wanted through an INTERPOL Red Notice and was deported from Dubai to Ghana on 30th August 2026 by a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit and INTERPOL. During interrogation, he admitted to the murder. The vehicle has been recovered.

2. Bank robbery syndicate foiled at Labone

Police have foiled robbery attacks on banks and bank customers in Accra and Tema and arrested one suspect, while two others were shot dead.

According to the IGP, the gang monitored victims at banks, used master keys to open vehicles and robbed customers after withdrawals.

On 17th May 2026, they robbed a lady of GH¢50,000 at Agbamaame, Tema Community 2, after she withdrew the amount. On 11th June 2026, they attacked a young man at Achimota at gunpoint after a bank withdrawal.

On 13th August 2026, the surveillance team from the Office of the Special Operations Assistant to the IGP (SOA) tracked the gang in a black Hyundai Tucson (GS 7915-19) and an ash Toyota Highlander (GS 1434-18) as they positioned themselves between Zenith, GCB and Ecobank at Labone to attack.

The police swiftly foiled the attack. Two suspects were shot dead, one escaped, and 49-year-old Augustine Okechuku Maazi was arrested and remanded.
