Former Member of Parliament for Odododiodoo, Jonathan Nii Tackie Kommey, has commended the incumbent MP, Alfred Nii Ashie Kotey, for improving social intervention programmes in the constituency, particularly for the youth.
Speaking at the graduation of about 27 constituents who have gone through the MP’s skill training programme on Sunday, September 6, 2026, the former legislator, who now serves as Chairman of the Council of Elders for Krowor and a member of the Greater Accra Regional Council of Elders, said that while successive MPs, including himself and others, did their best, the current administration has raised the bar.
“The truth is one, and it is always good to say it. We need improvement for our people, especially the youth. That’s why during my term I did what I could by providing these machines, hair dryers, and the rest for some of the youth who couldn’t complete school to be gainfully employed,” he said.
“I know he did it; I know my seniors. The first MP, Hon. Ismail, did his best, but we need improvement. So I’m saying I appreciate. He has not stopped what we started, but he is doing it, and he has improved it more, and that is what we want.”
The former MP disclosed that during his tenure he also offered scholarships to university students and facilitated employment in the security services, including the police, but said the current MP’s efforts within just one year have been exceptional.
“We all did our best. I gave scholarships to people to universities and the rest. All, I did a lot. Employment, police, and those things. So we all did a lot, but I’m saying within the year that he has come, he is doing better, and that is what we all appreciate because that is what we want.”
Reaffirming his loyalty to the National Democratic Congress, he said he remains an active member of the party and must speak out when things are going well.
“I’m still in the party. I’m a member of the party. I’m serving on the regional council of elders. So if something is not going well in it, it will affect me. So if he is doing the right thing, I have to say it, and that is all I’ve said,” he stated.
When asked if he would call on constituents to re-elect Nii Ashie Kotey when the opportunity comes, the former MP answered affirmatively.
“When the time comes, I will, because many times it is good for us to continue rather than to start again. It has happened to some of us, but we don’t blame anybody. So we have to learn from our mistakes. It’s just one year. So if he is to be given a second term, I will support it fully,” he said.
He also advised beneficiaries of the various training and empowerment programmes to remain committed and not abandon their training midway, recalling that during his time some beneficiaries dropped out after getting pregnant.
“When you are put in, please try your best to finish it because it is a trade being given to you which will last you forever. So my advice to them is when the opportunity comes, and they are given those chances, they should not waste the chance but hold on to it very diligently,” he advised.
He described the empowerment drive as consistent with the NDC’s social democratic philosophy.
“The NDC party is a social democratic party. So that is what we do for our people. We have to see to the benefit and welfare of our people, and this is part of social responsibility. So it is the wish of the party that no member of the party is left alone,” he added.
