The Madina Divisional Command of the Ghana National Fire Service has received a major boost to its firefighting operations following the commissioning of a mechanized borehole by the Member of Parliament for Madina, Dr. Francis Xavier Sosu.
The project, delivered through a partnership involving the Office of the Madina MP, Race 4 Aid, and an Islamic charity project team under the office of the Madina MP, is expected to improve the availability of water for firefighting and enhance emergency response across the municipality.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony on behalf of the MP and the Madina Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Hon. Ibrahim Alhaji Seidu, Chief of Staff at the Office of the Madina MP, Ivan Dzakpasu, described the borehole as a critical investment in public safety.
“I want to thank the MP, Dr. Francis Xavier Sosu, and the MCE for the opportunity to represent them at this important event,” he said.
Mr. Dzakpasu explained that the project was initiated after the MP’s “People’s Accounting Tour” in October last year, during which the parliamentary team visited security agencies in the municipality to assess their operational challenges.
“One of the major infrastructure needs identified was a reliable water source for the Fire Service. Through our partnership with Raid for Aid and other collaborators, we were able to secure this mechanized borehole to support the station’s operations,” he said.
He expressed confidence that the facility would significantly strengthen firefighting efforts within the municipality.
Madina Divisional Fire Officer, Abdullai Salia, welcomed the project, describing it as a long-awaited intervention that would improve the Fire Service’s operational efficiency.
“This project is very significant to us. It is something we have always been hoping for because firefighting cannot be effective without a reliable source of water,” he said.
He clarified that while fire tenders are dispatched with water, their tanks are eventually depleted during prolonged firefighting operations.
“The challenge has always been where to replenish our water after it is exhausted. Functional fire hydrants are limited within the municipality, so this borehole has come at the right time to support our operations,” he explained.

According to the Divisional Fire Officer, the new water source will enable fire crews to quickly refill their fire tenders and return to emergency scenes without unnecessary delays.
“Firefighting is a continuous process. If operations are interrupted because of a lack of water, the fire can quickly regain strength and spread further. This facility will help us sustain firefighting efforts and better protect lives and property,” he noted.
Mr. Salia expressed appreciation to the Madina MP and the Municipal Chief Executive for responding to the Fire Service’s request for support.
He, however, appealed for additional investments, particularly the installation of a larger water storage tank to complement the borehole.
“While this borehole is a major improvement, we will need a bigger polytank to store more water. This will ensure that several fire tenders can refill simultaneously during major fire outbreaks,” he said.
He added that the additional storage capacity would be especially beneficial in fire-prone communities within Madina, where rapid access to water is critical in preventing extensive damage and protecting lives.
