Tragedy struck on the Ntotroso-Sunyani Highway in the Bono Region last Friday when an unidentified driver was shot and killed while transporting passengers from Sunyani to Bibiani.

The driver, reportedly shot in the head, succumbed to the attack that has left the community shaken and demanding immediate government intervention.

Assemblyman Richard Adu, representing the Atronie Electoral Area, confirmed the fatal shooting and expressed deep concern over the growing insecurity along this critical route, which connects the Bono and Ahafo Regions.

The incident also left two passengers seriously wounded by gunfire; they are currently receiving medical treatment at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital, where the deceased driver’s body has been deposited.

Local residents, speaking to Adom News, described the Ntotroso-Sunyani Road as a notorious hotspot for highway robberies, attributing the surge in violent attacks to the road’s deteriorated condition.

Originally constructed during the administration of former President John Agyekum Kufuor, the highway has since fallen into a state of disrepair, creating an environment that emboldens armed robbers to operate with relative impunity.

“The deplorable condition of the road makes it easier for criminals to ambush unsuspecting motorists,” one resident lamented.

Another passenger expressed growing fear about traveling the route, noting that the frequency of attacks has made what should be a routine journey a life-threatening ordeal.

The escalating insecurity has also severely disrupted the livelihoods of local farmers in the Atronie community.

A female farmer revealed that many are now afraid to access their farms due to the constant threat of robbery and sporadic gunfire, further compounding the economic challenges faced by residents.

The incident has reignited long-standing calls from the community for authorities to urgently rehabilitate the highway and bolster security measures.

Residents argue that improved road conditions and increased police presence would help curb the spate of violent crimes plaguing the area.

Security agencies are reportedly aware of the situation, but locals say that more decisive action is needed to restore safety and confidence among commuters and residents alike.
