2026 Budget is a “Chop Chop Budget”:We will Scrutinize every Document-Afenyo

Leader of the minority caucus in Ghana’s 9th Parliament, Alexander Afenyo Markin has served notice to the NDC government that they will scrutinize the 2026 budget which he terms as “chop chop budget”.

“We know that the 2026 budget is a “chop chop budget and we are going to open our eyes to scrutinize every contract and document that goes to PPA”

Addressing the press on Monday January 26, 2026, at their Holding Government to Account theme: A year of Active and Responsible minority scrutiny in Ghana’s 9th Parliament.

The minority leader stated that beyond the scrutiny, motions will equally be file to authenticate these contracts and documents.

Again he stated that the minority will not sit idle and allow the majority caucus use their numbers to deny them their duty in ensuring that there is proper oversight.

However, Mr. Markin made a call to the Rt. Hon. Speaker of parliament Alban Bagbin to ensure he protects both caucus despite being an NDC member.

“We are aware Mr. Speaker is an NDC member but when he sits he is to protect both sides of the house”.

” We have been frustrated by numerous dismissals of our motions, questions are delayed, decline and issues that must be allowed to be debated on the floor see subtle culture of silence being introduced and procedural road blocks are used to deny us the opportunity” he lamented.

He therefore pleaded with the Rt. Hon. Speaker to prioritize prudence over procedure.

The Effutu legislator reiterated that his side of the house will not renege in their fundamental duties to the Constitution.

“We will fight for the good people of Ghana and in doing so, we will not be obstructed, but scrutinize, hold government to account”.

“and we will ensure that just as we did in 2025 were we brought up issues to the limelight and this time around we will do so even now that we have a leader after our primaries elections and we are going to do so with a firm determination and assurance that come 2028 NPP deserves to come back to office” he assured.
