Police Arrest Driver with 713 Slabs of Suspected Narcotic Drugs at Bekwai Checkpoint

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has arrested a man for the unlawful possession of a large quantity of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs following an intelligence-led operation at Asanso in the Ashanti Region.

The suspect, identified as Atampugri Akanyani, was arrested on 26 January 2026 while driving a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter bus with registration number AC 718-25.

He was intercepted by a police snap-check team at the Asanso police checkpoint.

A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of nine nylon sacks concealed in the bus.

Upon inspection, the sacks were found to contain compressed dried leaves suspected to be narcotic drugs.

In total, seven hundred and thirteen (713) slabs of the suspected substances were retrieved.

Police sources say that during the arrest, the suspect allegedly attempted to bribe officers with an amount of GH¢150,000, an offer which was firmly rejected by the police team.

The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with investigations.

Police say efforts are ongoing to trace the source of the suspected narcotic drugs and to identify and arrest other persons connected to the offence.

The Ashanti South Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating drug-related crimes and urged the public to support law enforcement agencies with timely and credible information.
