Five persons have been arrested and arraigned before the James Town District Court for engaging in open defecation at the Osu Cemetery in Accra.

The arrests were carried out by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Unit of the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) as part of a targeted operation to curb insanitary practices in public spaces.

Municipal authorities say the exercise forms part of intensified efforts to enforce sanitation by-laws, particularly in sensitive locations such as cemeteries, which are expected to be treated with dignity and maintained in hygienic condition.

According to officials, the suspects were apprehended during routine monitoring within the cemetery enclave.

They were subsequently processed and put before the James Town District Court to face charges related to sanitation offences.

KoKMA has reiterated its commitment to tackling open defecation and other environmental health violations within the municipality.

The Assembly warned that offenders will continue to face prosecution as part of broader measures to promote public health, environmental cleanliness, and respect for public spaces.

Authorities also urged residents to make use of designated public toilet facilities and to support efforts aimed at maintaining a clean and sanitary environment across the municipality.
