In a decisive move to combat the growing threat of opioid trafficking, Ghana’s Minister for Health, Mr. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, announced a major joint operation that led to the interception of a large consignment of opioids at Tema Port on March 14.
The operation, carried out by the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), and Customs, successfully thwarted the illegal shipment of opioids disguised as a transit cargo from Ghana to Niger.
The minister revealed that the illicit drugs were promptly taken to court, where an order was issued for their destruction.
The opioids were then safely disposed of under the watchful eye of various agencies, including the FDA, NACOC, and the Ministry of Science and Environment.
Mr. Akandoh made it clear that Ghana will not become a sanctuary for the trafficking of opioids, vowing that his ministry will continue to strengthen monitoring efforts at the nation’s ports and harbors to prevent the influx of these dangerous substances.
He also disclosed plans to investigate the client agent and importer involved in the shipment, who is reported to be a foreign national.
The Health Minister expressed his appreciation to the courts, law enforcement agencies, and the media for their unwavering support in the fight against opioid trafficking.
He reiterated his commitment to ensuring the safe disposal of opioids and protecting the nation from their harmful impact.
This significant development comes as Ghana intensifies its efforts to address the opioid epidemic, which poses serious risks to the country’s youth and overall productivity.
