President John Dramani Mahama has championed the abolition of the Electronic Transaction Levy (E-levy), touting it as a strategic move to bolster digital financial services in Ghana.
The E-levy, which previously imposed a 1% tax on electronic transactions, was officially scrapped on April 2, 2025.
Despite some critics viewing it as a significant revenue source, Mahama emphasized that this move will increase accessibility to digital services for Ghanaians.
Speaking at the Czech-Ghana Business Cooperation Seminar, Mahama highlighted Ghana’s rapid digital transformation in financial and digital services.
“In financial and digital services, Ghana is undergoing a rapid digital transformation.
The recent repeal of the e-levy on electronic transactions, among other taxes, promises further growth and inclusion in digital financial services.” He stated
This decision aligns with the National Democratic Congress (NDC) 2024 Manifesto, which promises to scrap “draconian” taxes, including E-levy, betting tax , emissions tax and other levies.
The scrapping of the E-levy is expected to alleviate hardships and ease the high cost of doing business in the country, promoting digital financial inclusion and fostering economic growth and development.
Notably, by increasing accessibility to digital services, the government aims to drive economic progress and improve the lives of Ghanaians.
