The Achimota Circuit Court has granted bail to Mr. Mohammed Zakou, a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), following his arrest for allegedly spreading false information concerning Vice President Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Mr. Zakou was taken into custody after posting a message on Facebook that read, “Rest Well Her Excellency,” accompanied by crying emojis.
The post sparked public concern and confusion, with many interpreting it as an announcement of the Vice President’s death, despite official reports indicating she was only unwell at the time.
Represented by lawyer Gary Nimako Marfo, Mr. Zakou’s legal team requested bail, which the prosecution did not oppose, on the condition that the bail terms would ensure his availability for trial.
The court subsequently granted bail set at GH₵100,000, with two sureties required.
As part of the bail conditions, Mr. Zakou is required to report weekly to the investigator handling the case.
The matter has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management conference.
The prosecution, led by officials from the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB), disclosed that Mr. Zakou admitted to authoring the post but claimed it was meant as a gesture of goodwill, not a deliberate attempt to mislead the public or cause alarm.
