NCA hinted that the NDC government can’t reduce data prices in Ghana

Nana Dufie Bedu, the Director of Consumer and Corporate Affairs, at the National Communications Authority, says the NDC government can’t reduce data prices in Ghana.

To understand why, let’s look at the bigger picture. The NCA is the body in charge of regulating Ghana’s telecommunications industry. In July 2024, they addressed concerns about high internet data prices, reassuring the public that they are committed to ensuring fair competition and protecting consumers.

Interestingly, Ghana’s internet data prices are quite affordable compared to many other African countries. A recent report ranked Ghana third in Africa for having some of the cheapest mobile internet data prices.

So, why can’t data prices be reduced further? The NCA’s position likely takes into account factors like market conditions, regulatory rules, and the development of infrastructure. They are working to encourage competition among telecom companies, which can affect how prices are set.

It’s also important to note that the NCA has put in place measures to make sure competition remains fair and that consumers are protected. These include rules about interconnection rates, price parity, and neutrality in technology.

In the end, while Nana Dufie Bedu’s statement may seem discouraging, it’s important to understand the complexities of managing data pricing. The NCA’s main goal is to foster fair competition and protect consumers, which doesn’t always mean prices will go lower.
