Vice President Reveals Ministry of Defence’s GH₵3.7 Billion Debt, Highlights Challenges Facing Armed Forces

Ghana’s Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, has revealed that the Ministry of Defence is currently grappling with a debt of GH₵3.7 billion, which includes GH₵275 million owed to food suppliers.

This disclosure was made during the swearing-in ceremony of the newly appointed members of the Ghana Armed Forces Council on March 24 at the Ministry of Defence.

The Vice President’s announcement has raised concerns about the financial strain the Ministry is under and the potential impact on the country’s security operations.

She explained that the debt includes obligations for food supplies, equipment, repairs, and machinery that are essential for the armed forces.

The situation highlights the Ministry’s ongoing financial challenges and its struggle to meet its operational needs.

Despite the debt, Professor Opoku-Agyemang opined on the government’s commitment to ensuring the armed forces remain well-equipped and capable of safeguarding the nation’s security.

“We are fully committed to ensuring that, despite these challenges, the armed forces remain well-equipped and capable of securing the nation,” she said..

The Vice President added that collaborating with the Ghana Armed Forces Council and other stakeholders will be key to resolving the situation.
