As the rainy season approaches, President John Dramani Mahama has raised serious concerns over the delayed completion of critical drainage projects in Greater Accra, warning that the region could face severe flooding in the coming months.
With May and June marking the peak of rainfall, Mahama emphasized the urgency of addressing the unfinished work.
“These garage projects, aimed at desilting the major drains, were initiated last year, but it’s evident that they are significantly behind schedule.
“From my observations, these drains will not be operational before the rains begin. If that’s the case, we must prepare for the likelihood of major flooding this season,” he said.
Expressing disappointment, Mr. Mahama added, “I expected contractors to use the dry season to expedite their work, but unfortunately, we are now behind. We must now brace ourselves for the consequences of these delays.”
Despite the setbacks, the President urged residents to take proactive measures to mitigate damage.
“I’ve instructed the garage secretariat, the hydrology section, and the ministry to ensure strict oversight on these projects, especially on the major drains,” he said.
Mr. Mahama also highlighted the obstruction of smaller drains by construction and illegal property development, contributing to localized flooding.
He pledged to take action, stating, “We will systematically mark all waterways and remove any obstructions to protect lives and property.”
The President further underscored the government’s commitment to a lasting solution, declaring,
“We are serious about addressing this issue. We will appoint district chief executives to identify and eliminate obstacles to proper water flow in their districts, ensuring a resilient Accra.”
Mr. Mahama concluded with a call for urgency, urging the Ministry and contractors to use the remaining dry season to accelerate work on drainage projects before the rains fully arrive.
“We must capitalize on these conditions to finish the work swiftly and prevent the annual cycle of devastation,” he stressed.
