Residents of Kings Down, a community within the Oforikrom Municipality in the Ashanti Region, woke to tragedy on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, after the lifeless body of an unidentified man was discovered submerged in a stream following a night of heavy rainfall.

The body, partially lodged beneath debris along the banks of the stream, is believed to have been carried away by floodwaters during a severe downpour that struck the area on Tuesday, June 3.

Local residents say the rains, which began late in the evening and continued into the night, caused significant water accumulation and flash flooding in several low-lying areas of the municipality.

Eyewitnesses who spoke to Citi News expressed concern over the recurring threat posed by poor drainage systems and unchecked development near waterways.

Many believe the deceased may have been attempting to cross the stream or seek shelter when he was overwhelmed by the fast-moving floodwaters.

Emergency services, including the police and municipal disaster response teams, were yet to retrieve the body as of the time this report was filed.

Authorities are expected to launch an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and to identify the deceased.

This tragic event has once again highlighted the dangers of flooding in urban areas, particularly in parts of Kumasi and its surrounding municipalities where drainage infrastructure is often inadequate to cope with sudden, heavy rains.

Residents have renewed calls for the Oforikrom Municipal Assembly and national disaster management agencies to improve stormwater infrastructure and intensify public education on flood safety, especially during the peak of Ghana’s rainy season.

The body has been secured pending autopsy and identification, as police urge anyone with information about a missing relative in the area to contact the nearest station.

As Ghana continues to battle seasonal flooding and its associated hazards, this incident serves as a sobering reminder of the urgent need for sustainable urban planning and disaster preparedness across vulnerable communities.
