The Member of Parliament for Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abirem (KEEA), Hon. Samuel Atta Mills, has strongly reacted to claims by the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) suggesting that the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) intends to manipulate the Electoral Commission (EC) in the upcoming Ablekuma North rerun.
Speaking to a group of journalists in Parliament on Monday, July 10, 2025, the KEEA MP questioned the NPP’s credibility in making such accusations.
“If the NPP thinks the government will manipulate the EC, then what did they do when they were in power?” Hon. Atta Mills asked. “If they are accusing us of manipulation, it only suggests they may have done the same during their time.”
Describing the opposition’s claim as a “very pregnant statement,” the legislator implied that the NPP’s allegations could be an inadvertent admission of their own past actions.
His comments come ahead of the July 11 rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency, which has garnered national attention.
The Deputy Commissioner of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, recently appeared before Parliament to clarify preparations for the rerun.
Reacting to the NPP’s announcement of a possible boycott, Hon. Atta Mills dismissed it as politically unwise. He argued that such a move would only harm the NPP’s own electoral prospects.
“Their boycott declaration has already backfired. It’s weakening their base and could lead to voter apathy,” he stated.
