Ghana National Gas Company (Ghana Gas) has proposed a significant 91% increase in the tariff on natural gas — from the current $1.10 to $2.10 per million British thermal units (MMBtu).
The proposed adjustment, if approved, would represent the most substantial price shift in recent years, aimed at addressing the growing infrastructure and operational demands of the sector.
According to Ghana Gas, the proposed tariff hike is necessary to finance critical infrastructure expansion projects, sustain reliable gas processing and transportation, and ensure continued energy security as national demand surges.
The company argues that the current tariff structure is no longer sufficient to cover rising operational costs, maintain existing facilities, and invest in the expansion required to meet Ghana’s growing energy needs — especially in the power generation and industrial sectors.
Officials from Ghana Gas indicate that without the proposed increase, the company risks underinvestment, which could lead to service disruptions, reduced gas supply reliability, and delayed infrastructure rollouts vital to national development goals.
The proposal is currently under review by the Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC), which will evaluate the economic impact, stakeholder concerns, and broader implications for electricity tariffs and industrial competitiveness.
If approved, the new tariff would take effect within the next regulatory cycle.
Stakeholders — including power producers, industries, and consumer advocacy groups — are expected to weigh in during upcoming consultations.
