The National Youth Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Salam Mustapha, has issued a rallying call to Ghanaian youth to stand up against what he describes as increasing political oppression and selective justice under the leadership of President John Mahama.
Addressing a press conference on Friday, September 19, Mr. Mustapha alleged that the Mahama-led administration, in collaboration with elements within the security agencies, is orchestrating a campaign of intimidation and politically motivated arrests targeting NPP members.
He cited several instances of what he called abuse of power, including physical assaults, breaches of constitutional protections such as the 48-hour rule, and the imposition of excessive bail conditions on party supporters.
“We’re witnessing state-sponsored harassment of opposition voices.
Our country is being destroyed. The youth of Ghana are no longer safe.
They cannot speak freely.
We will not allow a government to turn us into timid tenants in our own democracy.
That is not the spirit of Ghana’s youth,” he said.
Mr. Mustapha contrasted this alleged crackdown on NPP supporters with what he termed as lenient treatment of individuals affiliated with the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
He referenced specific cases, including a reported threat against Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin and an alleged assault on the NPP’s third Vice Chairman, Alhaji Osman Masawudu, purportedly by NDC’s Chief Awudu Sofo Azorka.
Calling for mass mobilisation, he urged young people across the country to join a planned protest on Tuesday, September 23, which he said is aimed at challenging what he described as growing tyranny and abuse of state power.
“That is why, in the voice of defiance, I say to you — rise and let’s demonstrate on the 23rd. Let’s show our disgust at the selectivity, the injustice, and the perversion of power.
This is about our collective safety and the kind of society we want to build for the future of Ghana.” he concluded.
