The Member of Parliament for Atiwa West, Hon. Korkor Asante, has called for decisive measures to address the alarming rate of maternal mortality in Ghana.

Speaking in Parliament, Hon. Asante expressed deep concern over the rising number of women dying during childbirth, citing a recent study by the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital that puts the maternal mortality ratio at 801 deaths per 100,000 live births.

“Maternal mortality is a national emergency that requires immediate attention,” Hon. Asante said.

“We must take concrete steps to ensure that our healthcare system is equipped to provide quality care to pregnant women, particularly in rural areas.”

Hon. Asante attributed the high maternal mortality rate to factors such as inadequate healthcare infrastructure, lack of skilled midwives, and limited access to emergency services.

The Atiwa West MP called on the government to increase funding for maternal healthcare, improve data collection with accountability while empowering women and communities to demand better healthcare services.

“The government must prioritize maternal healthcare and ensure that no Ghanaian woman dies giving life,” Hon. Asante emphasized.

The call by Hon. Asante is expected to spark a national conversation on maternal mortality and the need for urgent action to address this pressing issue.

The Ghana Health Service has acknowledged the challenges facing the healthcare system and has pledged to work with stakeholders to improve maternal healthcare services.

As Ghana strives to reduce maternal mortality, the role of leaders like Hon. Asante is crucial in advocating for policies and programs that prioritize the health and well-being of women.
