Continuous existence of the Office of the Special Prosecutor vis a vis budgetary allocation amounts to a wanton waste of taxpayers resources, the Manhyia South Member of Parliament, Honourable Baffour Awuah has pushed.
He argued that the OSP’s output is a deviation of the intent which,he advanced as the investigation into Auditor General’s report and the corresponding retrieval and prosecution of those culpable.
Honourable Baffour in an interview contended that Mr. Kissi Agyebeng’s neglect of the sole mandate amounts to incapacitation.
“The mandate includes protecting the public purse by investigating and prosecuting corruption and breaches of the Public Procurement Act. However, it’s evident that the office has drifted away from this core objective,”the Manhyia South legislator said in an interview with the media in Parliament.
Honourable Awuah contends that the Auditor General’s report is a crucial document that identifies instances of corruption and procurement breaches, yet the Special Prosecutor’s office hasn’t leveraged it effectively.
“Instead, he exposed that the OSP had relied on whistleblowing and media reports, which are supplementary at best.
He said that the focus of OSP should be on the Auditor General’s report, identifying prima facie cases of corruption, and prosecuting same.
He maintained that the office’s failure to do so raises questions about its effectiveness and whether it’s achieving its mandate.
Mr. Baffour Awuah is advocating for what
he termed “A thorough review” stressing the necessity to realign the office with its original purpose and ensure it serves the public interest.
