The issue of housing deficit in Ghana can be addressed by leveraging existing structures, the Dormaa West Member of Parliament, Honourable Vincent Oppong Asamoah has said.
Being the Chairman of the Works and Housing Committee, he believes that rather than solely focusing on building new houses, the government can explore partnerships with private landlords to utilize vacant properties.
“Let’s move in, let’s look for these houses, let’s look for the owners, government can partner them so that the rent assistance scheme will roll out using those structures,” the speaker suggested.
The Honourable Member of Parliament, was speaking
in an interview with Daily Analyst proffering measures to address the perennial housing deficits in the country.
Statistics from the Ghana Statistical Service disclosed that Ghana’s housing deficits remains at some 1.8 million housing units affecting over 5.4 million
By serving as a mediator between tenants and landlords, the government can help make housing more affordable and accessible.
This approach can help alleviate the housing deficit, making it possible for more people to secure decent living arrangements.
Honourable Oppong Asamoah’s proposal highlights the potential for innovative solutions to Ghana’s housing challenges, emphasizing collaboration with the private sector for creative problem-solving.
Despite the Ghana government’s efforts in initiating several programs to address the housing crisis, including the National Home Ownership Fund, Affordable Housing Project, with the latest being the National Rent Assistance Scheme which the MP believes with proper implementation,will help in addressing the perennial challenge.
The Dormaa West legislator for a concerted efforts to bridge the housing gap and ensure affordable housing for all Ghanaians.
