Kwadaso MP urges Supreme Court to quash Kpandai election rerun

The Member of Parliament for Kwadaso constituency, Honourable Prof. Kingsley Nyarko, has called on the Supreme Court to overturn the Tamale High Court’s ruling ordering a rerun of the Kpandai parliamentary election.

The Supreme Court’s suspension of the rerun has sparked optimism that the apex court may ultimately halt the rerun of the election.

Prof. Nyarko expressed his concerns, stating that the Supreme Court’s decision suggests there are fundamental issues with the High Court’s ruling.

“If the Supreme Court deems the ruling of the Tamale High Court as wrong, then it should be bold to annul the ruling,” he said.

The controversy surrounds the 2024 parliamentary election in Kpandai, where Matthew Nyindam (NPP) won with 27,947 votes, beating Daniel Nsala Wakpal (NDC) who got 24,213 votes.

The High Court annulled the results due to irregularities in 41 polling stations, citing non-compliance with electoral regulations.

Prof. Nyarko questioned the judiciary’s independence, citing recent events, including the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Esaaba Torkonoo.

“With the unfortunate series of events happening, I think there is something wrong with the judiciary,” he said.

The Supreme Court’s decision is pending, and the fate of the Kpandai parliamentary election hangs in the balance.
