President John Dramani Mahama has signalled a potential strategic role for former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen as Ghana positions itself to assume the chairmanship of the African Union (AU) in 2027.
The indication follows the endorsement of President Mahama by ECOWAS Heads of State as the next AU Chairperson.
Addressing participants at The African Summit in Accra, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, relayed the President’s message, noting that Mr. Kyerematen would occupy a “very special place” in Ghana’s AU leadership agenda, particularly due to his longstanding contributions to African integration.
Mr. Ablakwa stressed that Ghana’s stewardship of the continental body would demand deep expertise, strong institutional capacity, and credible policy direction.
In this regard, he highlighted the relevance of initiatives and structures established by Mr. Kyerematen through the Centre for Strategic African Development (CENSADEV).
Alan Kyerematen, a former Minister of Trade and Industry, brings extensive experience in trade policy and regional integration.
His career includes service as Ghana’s Ambassador to the United States and as a Trade Adviser at the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
President Mahama’s anticipated tenure as AU Chairperson is expected to focus on advancing African unity, strengthening peace and security, and accelerating economic development across the continent.
